As a child, most of my time home was spent with my paternal grandparents. I address them as “Pappa” and “Masi”. Pappa would leave me at school and Masi would pick me up. They have shared stories with me on how I would not allow anyone else to do this job. At home, Pappa would help me with my studies. Though a very strict and disciplined individual, would tolerate all my tantrums, let me do homework at my will and guide me on that.


As I grew, I remember I always wanted them by my side during all my school exams and important events of my life. They accompanied me and my parents during my admission in college and I still remember tears in their eyes when they came to see me off at the station while I leave for a new beginning at my college. During college, one of the vacations I decided to stay back to complete few courses. Both of them came and stayed with me for a month and I remember how we had gala time with each other. Today Pappa is 94 and Masi is 81 and I am blessed to have them in my lives. They do wait for my visit and calls. Pappa today has little difficulty in hearing but surprisingly hears most of the things when I call.


Being with them has subtly taught me so many things. Besides your parents, grandparents are the ones who love you unconditionally. I also experienced with grandparents around, you always have someone to talk and share. They are the ones who can imbibe good values in you.  My grandparents gave me something which is very difficult to be found and most invaluable – their time. They still continue to do that when I visit and call them.


My maternal grandparents have also been very caring and loving. I used to visit them during vacation. I remember how we used to keep troubling my grandfather when he used to sleep just to have fun and he used to enjoy that. They were the ones who came and stayed with me while I was unwell in college to take care of me.
When I asked my children how grandparents are unique, they had following to say:
1. Grandparents feel hurt the most when parents scold 
2. They are over protective
3. They are the ones who care while parents are away
4. They are always ready to help.
5. They love unconditionally
Grandparents and Grandchildren are the best gifts to each other.  My grandparents are my friends forever.
