Are you a Perfect Parent or a Real one?

In today’s situation, we have been receiving different theories, various forwards, multiple DO’s and Don’ts about how to handle the lockdown. But we have some real heroes who do not have social media to post their views and whatsapp groups to forward anything that comes their way.

Yes, I am referring to our own kids. Today, I was part of a live session conducted by Kavitha Krishnamurthi – principal of HEAD Over Heels specifically for thanking kids. It was a wonderful gesture.

Kids of all age actually deserve a pat on their back . Kids love going out, meeting their friends and have heart to heart conversation. They also like to indulge in activities like cycling, skating, playing hide and seek and just be out in the fresh air with nature. Most of the kids are used to going out in the evening and be with friends. I don’t think we realise enough the stress and pain they are going through.

My elder daughter just completed her board exams and had made quite a few plans with her friends. She was quite excited about it. When the lockdown was announced she was sad that after working hard the entire year, now when the exams are over they have to sit at home. I, as usual started explaining to her and she said, “Sometimes I want to share theat I am upset and just want you to listen out to me without any response.”  

This really got me thinking. As a parent, why do I find the need to explain all the time? Is that my definition of being a perfect parent? Do I really need to be perfect?

Even as adults, we expect our dear and near ones to just hear us out at times. It would be so difficult for kids and teens to be in a situation where they are jailed in their own houses. They are not allowed to do things they love the most. It really needs a lot of courage to face this situation. Also there are homes (like in our case) where both the parents are working from home full time and the children also have additional responsibility of maintaining some more discipline.


After the conversation with my daughter, I tried finding out ways to spend time with my daughters which I always craved for otherwise. We started watching some good funny movies or some good series online daily that gives us some moments of togetherness. I also started involving them in the daily chores of washing and arranging utensils, sweeping and mopping. There are times when they don’t want to do things as per the time set be me.  In the current times, I feel they deserve that freedom and liberty – I need not be perfect J.


As children, we never faced this situation so it might be difficult to actually get into their shoes but we all know what we are going through as adults. We need to understand that kids are suffering much more than us. It’s ok to have the rooms dirty and it’s absolutely fine to have messed up beds. The most important thing is that kids remain occupied preferably with something they like, remain happy with smiles on their face, maintain their ability to handle their emotions.


During one of the discussion with my daughters before the lockdown, I mentioned to them that the situation might get worse. My younger daughter immediately shared that when I say such things they feel something really bad might happen. Though my tone was absolutely normal, what I say has huge impact on stress level of my kids.

The way I am today will decide how they will respond tomorrow. I need not feel worried and stressed just because everyone around is. Can I find a way to be my real self?

That day I decided to focus on following what we are supposed to as the citizen of the country and look at the positive aspects of the lockdown. I stopped listening to news, stopped reading forwards and stopped discussing about this topic on phone too. It really let me focus on things that needed my attention with a good frame of mind. This in turn had impact on my conversation with my kids and their mental state too.
I might have my own definition and views about a perfect parent but it doesn’t even matter because a perfect parent doesn’t exist.
Considering that this is a unique situation our children are going through, can each one of us be a real parent and  thank our kids for the wonderful human being they have been supporting us throughout these challenging times?
